Pharma Leaders Share Strategies for Resilient, Sustainable Cold Chains

The recent “Cold Chain Innovation: Digitalization, Resilience & Sustainability" seminar in Copenhagen, Denmark, brought together leading industry experts and peers to discuss the latest challenges and innovations in cold chain management. The event was cohosted by ELPRO and Cold Chain Technologies.

The key value proposition of our Leading Minds Network is to bring together industry leaders from pharma, life science, healthcare and logistics sectors in a spirit of collaboration and networking. In doing so, they share ideas, challenges and best practice on a personal level. It’s an environment where they can be transparent and learn from each other to work toward the common mission we all share--to provide safe and effective medications and therapies to patients.

Christoph Bamert CSO at ELPRO

The overarching theme of the seminar was how companies can optimize various aspects of their cold supply chain to meet the challenges of the ever-evolving and increasingly complex demands for temperature-sensitive products and advanced therapies. Over the course of the two-day event, attendees heard from a variety of speakers and participated in panel discussions covering topics such as:

  • Strategies for driving greater resilience in cold chain logistics, including the use of advanced monitoring and real-time predictive analytics

  • Innovative applications of cell and gene therapy storage and handling, with insights from leaders at Johnson & Johnson, Biostór Ireland, Moderna, and Cencora/World Courier.

  • Practical approaches to improving sustainability across the cold chain, from reducing emissions to optimizing freight modes

  • Advancements in quality assurance through automation and the future of Good Distribution Practices (GDP)

  • Mitigating risks in direct-to-patient and clinical trial supply shipments

ABOUT THE EVENT

One key takeaway was the critical importance of end-to-end visibility and data-driven decision making in managing today's complex cold chains. Speakers highlighted how technologies like IoT sensors, predictive analytics, and digital platforms can provide the real-time insights needed to identify bottlenecks, anticipate disruptions, and optimize operational efficiency.

Having a forum that provides industry professionals and subject matter experts, from various life science backgrounds--pharma manufacturers, suppliers, transportation and logistics providers and 3PLs--an opportunity to learn, network, collaborate, and grow is critical to drive excellence with a continued focus on quality and patient safety. This is exactly the objective of the Leading Minds Network and is what makes these events special.

Bryan Cardis, LLC Senior Director at Cold Chain Technologies

According to keynote presenter and certified GDP and GMP industry expert Michael Fleischer, the event was “a brilliant exchange of insights and know-how, as well as plenty of networking opportunities.”

Sustainability also emerged as a major priority, with panelists discussing strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of cold chain activities through modal shift, renewable energy, and circular economy initiatives. There was a strong recognition that environmental stewardship must go hand-in-hand with ensuring product quality and patient safety.
